What Happens When Women Start Strength Training After 40? Real Wins From Real Women

When most women think about starting a fitness program, they usually have a goal in mind.

Maybe they want to lose weight.

Maybe they want more energy.

Maybe they want to feel stronger or move without pain.

But what often surprises women is that some of the biggest victories have nothing to do with the scale.

They happen during everyday life.

And those are often the moments that matter most.

Recently, several clients shared wins with me that perfectly capture why strength training is about so much more than exercise.

The Movie Theater Stairs

One client recently went to the movies with her family.

Nothing unusual about that.

But this time, something was different.

As she climbed the stairs to her seat, she noticed she wasn't pulling herself up with the handrail.

For years, stairs had been a challenge.

In fact, she told me she often felt embarrassed because of how difficult they had become.

But this time?

She simply walked up.

No struggle.

No hesitation.

No relying on the railing.

Just confidence.

It's easy to take something like climbing stairs for granted until it becomes difficult.

That's why maintaining lower-body strength, balance, and mobility becomes so important as we age.

"I Feel Alive Again"

Another client shared something that stopped me in my tracks.

After just two weeks of training, she said:

"I feel alive! I feel great again. I was feeling so bad and sluggish."

Think about that for a moment.

Not:

"I lost weight."

Not:

"My clothes fit differently."

Simply:

"I feel alive."

Many women enter perimenopause and menopause feeling exhausted, sluggish, and disconnected from their bodies.

Research from experts like Dr. Stacy Sims and Dr. Mary Claire Haver suggests that appropriate strength training can help support energy levels, muscle health, metabolism, and overall well-being during this phase of life.

Sometimes the first change isn't what you see.

It's what you feel.

And that's often where the magic begins.

The First Push-Up

One of my favorite stories came from a client in her 60s.

She did her first push-up.

A real push-up.

Not against a wall.

Not on a bench.

A push-up.

The smile on her face was priceless.

Why?

Because it wasn't about the push-up.

It was proof.

Proof that she was stronger than she thought.

Proof that age doesn't determine what you're capable of.

Proof that progress is always possible.

Why These Wins Matter

At first glance, climbing stairs, feeling more energetic, and doing a push-up might seem unrelated.

But they all point to the same thing:

Improved quality of life.

Research from Dr. Gabrielle Lyon continues to highlight the importance of maintaining muscle as we age.

Muscle helps support:

✔️ Strength

✔️ Balance

✔️ Mobility

✔️ Bone health

✔️ Metabolism

✔️ Independence

And perhaps most importantly...

Confidence.

Because confidence doesn't come from what the scale says.

Confidence comes from knowing your body can do what you ask it to do.

Small Wins Become Big Transformations

Many women think they need a dramatic transformation to improve their lives.

But often, it starts with small victories.

Walking upstairs without discomfort.

Having enough energy to enjoy your day.

Picking something up without worrying about your back.

Doing a push-up.

Getting up from the floor with ease.

Carrying groceries without struggling.

These moments may seem small.

But together, they create something much bigger:

A stronger, more capable version of yourself.

What Could Your Next Win Be?

One of the most rewarding parts of strength training is that everyone starts in a different place.

For one woman, the goal might be walking upstairs comfortably.

For another, it might be hiking on vacation.

For another, it might simply be feeling like herself again.

The important thing is remembering that progress is possible.

No matter your age.

No matter where you're starting.

And sometimes the most meaningful victories happen when you least expect them.
