Your Bones Need a Reason to Stay Strong: What Aging Women Should Know About Bone Health
Bone health is something most women don't think much about—until they have a reason to.
Maybe you’ve had a bone density scan that showed osteopenia.
Maybe you’ve noticed that your doctor is paying more attention to your bone health now that you’re in your 40s, 50s, or beyond.
Or maybe you simply want to stay strong enough to travel, hike, garden, play with your grandchildren, and live independently for decades to come.
Whatever your reason, there is something important to understand:
Your bones are living tissue. And just like your muscles, they respond to the demands you place on them.
That means bone health isn't just about calcium supplements or waiting for your next DEXA scan.
Movement matters.
More specifically, the right kind of movement matters.
Why Bone Health Becomes More Important During Midlife
As women go through perimenopause and menopause, estrogen levels decline. Estrogen plays an important role in maintaining bone remodeling and bone strength, so the years around menopause can be a time when bone loss accelerates.
That doesn't mean every woman will develop osteoporosis.
And it doesn't mean bone loss is inevitable.
But it does mean that midlife is an important time to become more intentional about maintaining your bone health.
Think about it this way:
Your bones are constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Your body responds to the mechanical forces placed on your skeleton by adjusting bone tissue over time.
If your daily activities don't provide much mechanical challenge, your bones don't have as much reason to adapt.
This is one reason simply being "active" isn't always enough.
Walking is fantastic for your health.
Gardening is fantastic.
Cycling, swimming, yoga, and other activities all have value.
But your bones also benefit from progressive loading and impact.
And that's where strength training—and, when appropriate, jumping—come in.
Your Bones Need Stress to Get Stronger
The word stress usually has a negative connotation.
When we're talking about bone health, however, mechanical stress is a good thing.
When you lift a weight, your muscles contract and pull against your bones. Your skeleton experiences a load.
When you jump and land, your body experiences impact and your bones experience a rapid increase in loading.
These are different types of stimuli, but both can provide your bones with a reason to adapt.
Research supports resistance training and weight-bearing/impact exercise as important components of strategies to maintain or improve bone health, particularly when exercise is progressive and appropriately prescribed.
This doesn't mean you need to lift extremely heavy weights.
And it certainly doesn't mean you need to start jumping onto a box.
It means giving your body a challenge it can safely adapt to.
Why Strength Training Matters for Your Bones
Progressive resistance training is one of the most valuable forms of exercise women can incorporate as they age.
You're not just training your muscles.
You're also loading the skeleton.
Exercises such as:
Squats
Deadlifts and other hinge movements
Lunges and split squats
Step-ups
Rows
Presses
Carries
can all provide meaningful resistance to your body.
And there's another important piece here.
Strong muscles help you move through the world with greater strength, balance, and physical capacity.
That's important because bone health isn't just about bone density.
We want to maintain the physical abilities that allow you to keep doing the things you love.
Traveling.
Getting up from the floor.
Carrying your groceries.
Climbing stairs.
Hiking.
Playing with your grandchildren.
Getting in and out of the car.
Living independently.
The goal isn't simply to have a good number on a bone density report.
The goal is to maintain the capacity to live your life.
What About Jumping?
This is where things get interesting.
Impact exercise can provide a unique stimulus to bone because of the relatively rapid loading that occurs when you land.
Research on high-impact and jumping exercises has found benefits for bone mineral density and bone-related outcomes in appropriate populations.
But there's an important distinction:
More impact isn't automatically better.
If you haven't jumped in years, starting with repeated high-impact jumps may not be the smartest place to begin.
Your current fitness level, training history, joint health, balance, bone health, and any existing osteoporosis or fracture history all matter.
Instead, think of jumping as a progression.
Start with low-impact loading
Depending on your ability, this might include:
Heel drops or heel raises
Creating a deliberate impact through the heels can provide some loading without requiring a full jump.
Fast step-ups
Stepping onto a stable platform with intention can increase loading while keeping one foot connected to the ground.
Marching with purpose
A simple march can be a starting point for someone who isn't ready for impact work.
Squat to calf raise
Stand up from a squat and rise onto your toes, creating a controlled, purposeful movement.
Progress toward small jumps
If appropriate, you might eventually progress to:
Small pogo jumps
Jumping in place
Low-amplitude two-foot jumps
Small hop variations
The goal isn't to see how high you can jump.
The goal is to give your bones an appropriate impact stimulus.
And if jumping isn't appropriate for you right now, that's okay.
There are still plenty of ways to progressively load your body.
Don't Confuse "Low Impact" With "No Challenge"
One of the biggest misconceptions about exercise as we age is that everything needs to become gentle.
There's an important difference between appropriate and easy.
You don't need to beat up your joints.
You don't need to exercise through pain.
You don't need to perform extreme workouts.
But your body does need a reason to adapt.
A woman who can't safely jump may still be able to progressively increase the resistance on her squat, deadlift, step-up, or carry.
That is still meaningful training.
Your workout should meet your body where it is—and then give it a reason to become stronger.
5 Things You Can Start Doing for Your Bones Today
You don't need to overhaul your entire routine.
Start here.
1. Strength train consistently
Aim for regular resistance training that challenges the major muscle groups.
And don't be afraid of getting stronger.
Progressive resistance—not simply repeating the same light workout forever—is what creates an ongoing stimulus for adaptation.
2. Add appropriate impact
If jumping is appropriate for you, gradually introduce small amounts of impact.
If it isn't, start with a modification that you can perform safely and confidently.
Your starting point doesn't matter nearly as much as having somewhere to progress toward.
3. Train your legs and hips
Your hips, legs, and spine are important areas for maintaining bone strength and physical function.
Squats, hinges, lunges, step-ups, and carries can all play a role.
4. Keep moving outside your workouts
Your training session isn't the only movement that matters.
Walk.
Take the stairs.
Garden.
Hike.
Carry things.
Get up and down from the floor.
Look for opportunities to use your body throughout the day.
5. Don't forget the basics
Exercise is only one piece of bone health.
Adequate nutrition matters too, including sufficient protein, calcium, and vitamin D. Your healthcare provider can help determine whether you need supplementation based on your individual needs.
Sleep and overall health also matter.
Bone health is built from the combination of many things you do consistently—not one perfect workout.
What If You Already Have Osteopenia or Osteoporosis?
This is an important point.
Having osteopenia or osteoporosis does not automatically mean you should stop strength training.
In fact, appropriately prescribed resistance and weight-bearing exercise can be an important part of maintaining physical function and bone health.
But your program may need to be individualized.
If you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis, have a history of fractures, significant balance issues, or have other medical considerations, talk with your healthcare provider or a qualified exercise professional before beginning higher-impact exercise such as jumping.
The goal is not to avoid movement because your bones are fragile.
The goal is to find the right amount and type of loading for your current abilities.
Your Future Self Is Counting on What You Do Today
It's easy to think about bone health as something we need to worry about "later."
But later is exactly what we're trying to protect.
We want the woman in her 60s, 70s, and beyond to still be able to say:
"Yes, I can do that."
Yes to the trip.
Yes to the hike.

Yes to carrying the suitcase.
Yes to getting down on the floor with the grandkids.

And bone health isn't just about preventing a fracture.
